KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (13-5, 4-0) swept its second straight opponent and its second straight WAC weekend when it took down California Baptist (11-5, 2-2), 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center.
The Roos opened the match with 25-22 win over the Lancers, breaking a 12-12 tie with a 4-1 run that gave them a 17-13 lead. CBU closed to within one late at 22-21, but Brecka finished the set with a kill.
The Roos then pushed the lead to 2-0 with a dominating 25-12 win in set two. UMKC built the lead to 12-5 early on Harrington’s ace, before closing the set with a 7-1 run that featured four Harrington kills, including the set capper.
In the final frame, Kansas City gained a 12-7 advantage, but CBU battled back to take the lead at 19-18. Back-to-back points from the Roos, including a kill from Alex Ratzlaff, put UMKC back in front by one. CBU would tie the set at 20-20, but two kills from Brecka, one from Brooke Jacobs and an ace from Alli Schomers brought UMKC to the brink of victory. Ratzlaff then ended the match with a kill down the line to seal the win.
For the Roos, Ratzlaff notched 23 digs and seven kills, while Schomers finished with 20 assists and 11 digs. Kynnedy Myers, meanwhile, notched 21 assists, with Rhegan Spiegel tallying 15 digs. Offensively, Jacobs and Kelsie Milkowski each registered six kills.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they welcome in New Mexico State to the SRC for a 7 p.m. CT contest.
