KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (11-5, 2-0) completed its perfect conference opening weekend when it erased an 0-2 deficit to knock-off Utah Valley (8-7, 0-2), 3-2, on Saturday in Orem, Utah, in Western Athletic Conference play.
In the match, the Roos dropped the opening two sets, 25-17 and 25-16, but began the comeback from there.
In the third set, UMKC trailed by two early at 10-8 before tying the set at 10-10. The two squads would be tied 13 more times the rest of the set as neither team could gain more than a point advantage until a UVU error and a Harrington kill gave UMKC a 25-23 victory, cutting the lead in half.
The fourth set was a similarly close contest as the two teams were tied late at 24-24. Back-to-back errors, though, gave UMKC a 26-24 win and evened the match at two sets apiece.
In the deciding set, the Roos struck first on a kill from Harrington and pushed the lead to three twice, lastly at 10-7 on another Harrington kill. The Wolverines, however, reeled off four straight to go up 11-10. Utah Valley maintained the one point edge at 12-11, but UMKC gave up just one more point the rest of the match, while getting an ace from Kelsie Milkowski and a kill from Brecka, as well as two UVU errors, to take the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
For the Roos, Tyrecia Lukes hit .500 with 12 kills and seven blocks, including three solo, while in the back row, Rhegan Spiegel recorded 12 digs. Alli Schomers, meanwhile, had 26 assists and Kynnedy Myers added 24.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they welcome in Chicago State to the Swinney Recreation Center for a 7 p.m. CT WAC contest.
