KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC volleyball (9-5) opens up Western Athletic Conference play this week when it heads to Phoenix, Ariz., to take on Grand Canyon on Sep. 20 at 9 p.m. CT and Orem, Utah, to face Utah Valley on Sep. 22 at 2 p.m. CT.

UMKC closes out the nonconference schedule with a 9-5 record overall, its best nonconference record since going 11-3 in 2014. During the tournament slate, Tyrecia Lukes was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week during the season’s opening week and to the All-Tournament teams at the UMKC Invitational, Kangaroo Classic (MVP) and the Billiken Invitational and Alicia Harrington was named all-tournament at the Kangaroo Invitational and Billiken Invitational, while Melanie Brecka, Emma Dyer, Brooke Jacobs and Rhegan Spiegel each also garnered one all-tournament selection.
About the Opponents
GCU won seven of its 12 nonconference matches and had four players (Kaira Moss, Annabelle Kubinski, Teagan DeFalco and Kayla Matthews) earn all-tournament honors. The Lopes have tallied 13 double-doubles this season. Kayla Redfield leads the way with four, followed by Matthews (three), Melody Horton (three), Molly Feldmeth (two) and Meme Fletcher.
The Wolverines enter the weekend with an 8-5 record on the season, including notching a win over North Carolina State. Five times a UVU player was named to an all-tournament team including three times by Kristen Allred. Kazna Tarawhiti, meanwhile, was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sep. 3.
The Blue & Gold returns to Kansas City for its conference opener when it welcomes in Chicago State on Sep. 27 at 7 p.m. CT.
