About the Opponents
Saint Louis concludes regular-season tournament play this weekend by hosting the Billiken Invitational. Sophomore OH Maya Taylor continues to lead SLU’s offensive attack. Taylor tops the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranks 19th in the nation in kills per set (4.47), and she is second in the league and 35th in the nation in points per set (4.73). Isabelle Walsh collected All-Tournament honors at last week’s Sycamore Invitational, hosted by Indiana State. In three matches, Walsh had 31 kills (2.82/set), posted a .333 attack percentage (31-8-69) and added eight digs and six blocks.
The Rebels are coming off three straight wins at the Rebel Challenge, last weekend. Mariena Hayden was named the Rebel Challenge MVP while Elsa Descamps and Lauryn Burn were selected for the all-tournament team. Hayden leads the team with 155 kills while Antonette Rolda and Burt each have over 180 assists. As a team, they lead the country in service aces, averaging 2.30 per set, with Hayden averaging a nation-high 1.21 per set. She is the only player in the country averaging more than one ace per set. Hayden is also third in the country in points per set with 6.11.
Murray State, which returned every starter from last year’s team that went 22-9 overall and 12-4 (third) in the OVC, is the favorite to win the 2018 OVC title. Among the returnees are junior OH Rachel Giustino and junior RS Rachel Holthaus, both of whom earned first-team All-Conference honors in 2017, and sophomore MB Katirah Johnson, last year’s OVC Freshman of the Year. Giustino (4.38 kills/set) and redshirt-senior MB Dacia Brown (3.86 kills/set) lead the attack, while sophomore L Becca Fernandez has a team-high 3.66 digs/set.
The Blue & Gold will open up WAC play when they head to Phoenix, Ariz., to take on Grand Canyon on Sep. 20.
