MACOMB, Ill. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (3-1) carried over the momentum from their overtime victory on Friday night into a 4-0 demolition of Western Illinois (1-2) on Sunday afternoon.

The Roos wasted little time in hitting the scoreboard as Liz Mann (Kansas City, Mo.) took the ball to the right side of the box and fired a strike past the WIU keeper inside the left post at the 9:23 mark. The goal was Mann’s first of the season and second of her career.

Less than 10 minutes of game time later, Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) continued to stay hot after scoring both goals in the overtime win on Friday. After receiving a nice pass into the box from Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.), who picked up an assist on the game-winner against Illinois-Chicago, Mothershead redirected the ball into the left corner for a 2-0 advantage.

UMKC continued to apply pressure as the second half of play opened up, tacking on two more goals in the first seven minutes of period number two. A pass from Mothershead to the middle of the field just outside the box connected with freshman Amanda Sampson (Lee’s Summit, Mo.), who maneuvered left and quickly sent home her first career goal to extend the lead three goals at the 49:43 mark in her second career start.

In the 52’, it was Mothershead once again who put the finishing touches on a superb offensive weekend, scoring her fourth goal and recording her ninth point over the two matches. The goal was the senior forward’s fifth of the season and was assisted by Rylan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.), her third on the year.

“Kelsey Mothershead was fantastic once again today,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “After displaying a great amount of courage and senior leadership in Friday night’s win, she came back today and came through with another phenomenal match.”

Freshman goalkeeper Afton Fennewald (Lake Winnebago, Mo.) earned the start between the posts for the Roos and came through with an excellent performance in her debut. Fennewald recorded four saves on the day and secured her first career shutout in helping secure the victory.

The dominant performance saw the Roos hold a 25-6 advantage in shots and a 14-4 edge in shots on goal over their opponent. The 25 shots, 14 shots on goal and four goals all marked season high’s for the team in the early stages of the 2018 season.

“Today represented the ultimate team-effort that we strive to get in every match we play,” noted Cissell. “We were able to play all 21 players for significant minutes on the road and were still able to come away with a win, which is a huge boost for our team moving forward. This was the type of performance that we are capable of and expect to see the rest of season.”

UMKC returns to Durwood Stadium for a pair of home matches against Missouri Valley Conference opponents next week. The team will host Drake on Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m. CT before taking on Missouri State on Sunday, Sep. 2 at 1 p.m. CT.
