KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (2-1) dropped a five-set heartbreaker in the championship match of the UMKC Invitational to Austin Peay (3-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo.

For their efforts in the tournament, Tyrecia Lukes and Rhegan Spiegel were each named to the All-Tournament team.  On the day, Lukes finished with a team-best 25 kills, hitting .378 with five blocks, while Spiegel paced the Roos in the back row with 24 digs.

The Governors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match, taking the first two sets, 29-27 and 25-15, respectively.

The Roos then cut the lead in half with a third set win, erasing a 7-5 deficit and breaking a late 19-19 tie with six of the final nine points on kills from Kynnedy Myers, Melanie Brecka, Emma Dyer, Brooke Jacobs and Lukes to come away with a 25-22 win.

UMKC followed with an overwhelming 25-17 victory in set four after a 5-0 run featuring an ace from Spiegel and a kill from Alicia Harrington pushed the lead to 16-9.  Kansas City then stretched its advantage to a set-high eight at 22-14 on a Dyer kill, while Lukes notched the Roos final two points of the set with a pair of kills, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

In the final frame, the two squads were tied early at 4-4, but a 6-1 APU run made it 10-5 in favor of the Governors.  The Roos would cut the lead down to four on four separate occasions, but could get no closer as Austin Peay claimed the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

Defensively, UMKC finished with 86 digs, including 16 from Myers, 14 from Harrington, 11 from Alex Ratzlaff and 10 from Alli Schomers, while at the net, Dyer finished with a team-high nine of the Roos 14 blocks, with Jacobs adding five, Brecka adding three and Ratzlaff adding two.

Overall, Harrington (10 kills, 14 digs), Schomers (30 assists, 10 digs) and Myers (21 assists, 16 digs) each tallied double-doubles and offensively, Dyer and Brecka each finished with eight kills.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again next weekend when they head to Omaha, Neb., on Aug. 31-Sep. 1 for the Omaha Classic to take on Omaha, UTEP and UIC.
