KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (1-0) opened up the 2018 regular season on Friday night with a 2-1 win over Oakland (0-1) at Durwood Stadium.
The Roos struck first in the fourth minute as senior Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) gained control of an Oakland save off of a Rylan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) shot and cashed in on the open net opportunity. The goal was Howard’s first of the season and the assist was the first of Childers’ UMKC career.
Oakland notched an equalizing goal at 26:03 as a free kick awarded to the Golden Grizzlies set up a header in front of the net to even up the score at 1-1. UMKC struck quickly once again in the second half of play, as Childers sent a dazzling through-ball ahead of the back line to a streaking Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) snuck a shot past Oakland keeper Jaimie Leas to the right side of the net for a 2-1 Roos lead.
Neither side was able to generate any further offense in the remainder of the contest, although the Golden Grizzlies came within inches of evening the score once again in the final seconds of action. A UMKC foul called just outside the box set up a free kick for Oakland with time expiring, where keeper Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) made a full extension save on the attempted headed towards the top shelf, redirecting it harmlessly over the crossbar to seal the win.
“Tonight was a quality team win where we had several players make contributions toward picking up a win,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “I felt like we controlled the game more so than the score indicated and are happy to have walked away with a win to open up the season.”
The Roos controlled the pace throughout the majority of the match despite the close one-goal victory, outshooting their opposition by a count of 18-3. Four freshman made their UMKC debuts in the Friday night win, with Emma Wilson (Omaha, Neb.) and Childers making starts. Childers recorded two assists in her first ever game as a Roo.
UMKC is back in action on Sunday, Aug. 19 with a 2 p.m. CT home match against Saint Louis.
