WICHITA, Kan. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (3-3) dropped a pair of matches this weekend, falling to UT Arlington (2-1), 4-2 and 4-0 to Wichita State (5-2).
Against the Mavericks, Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) tallied a win at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0 victory, while Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) and Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) registered a 6-4 win from the No. 3 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Grace Ball (Wichita, Kan.) and Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) dropped a 6-4 decision for the Roos.
In singles action, Johnson gave the Roos their second point of the match with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 and Ball was leading her match at No. 6, 6-3, 3-1 when the match came to a close.
At No. 1, meanwhile, Ladutska fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and Grechkina also dropped a three-set match at No. 4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. From No. 2, Fries lost 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 5, Vale fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
In the match with the Shockers, Fries and Vale fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-0 to Giulia Guidetti and Ting-Ya Hsu and Grechkina and Johnson went down to Fatima Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco, 6-2, at No. 1 as WSU claimed the doubles point. At No. 2, meanwhile, Ladutska and Ball were leading 4-3 when the point was claimed.
In singles play, Ball fell at No. 6 to Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva, 6-1, 6-0 and Fries lost to Guidetti at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. The Shockers notched their final point at No. 3 where Johnson fell to Gabriela Porubin, 6-1, 6-1. Vale, meanwhile, was tied at No. 5, 6-6 when the match ended.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they head to Omaha, Neb., to take on Creighton at 11:30 a.m. CT.
