KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (3-11) was unable to overcome hot shooting from former Summit League foe South Dakota State (11-5) on Friday evening, falling 85-60, to the visiting Jackrabbits.

Both defenses added pressure early on, as the Jackrabbits held the slim 6-2 lead at the first media break. Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) made his first appearance back in the starting lineup and scored his first bucket to get UMKC on the board.

After four quick points out of the timeout by South Dakota State, a 3-pointer by Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) helped kick start the offense for the Roos, as Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) swished one home from deep on the next possession.

South Dakota State jumped out to a 20-9 lead at the midway point, before Robinson drained a 3-pointer to bring the Roos within eight points. The Jackrabbits put up eight-straight points to take a 30-13 lead, as the Roos went without a point for over four minutes.

A layup by Giles at the 6:00-mark gave some life to UMKC’s offense. Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) hit a 3-pointer for his first points of the game, cutting into the Jackrabbit lead. Newcomer Steve Dulley (Kansas City, Mo.) checked into the game and hit a pair at the free throw line to bring the Roos back within 14 points.

South Dakota State hit their eighth 3-pointer of the first half to take a 20 point lead over UMKC. The Roos went on an 8-0 run to close the half, but trailed South Dakota State, 46-30, going into the locker room.

At the half, Bishop and Giles had eight and nine points, respectively, to lead the team. On the boards, Robinson had six rebounds, while Bishop had a pair of assists.

Bishop scored the first four points of the second half for UMKC, as the Jackrabbits went on a 9-4 run to open the final 20 minutes of action. A layup by Dulley helped the Roos cut into the Jackrabbit lead, as the freshman would finish with a career-high nine points to go along with a career-high five rebounds.

South Dakota State went on an 8-0 run to jump out to a 30-point lead and the Roos could never recover, falling 85-60.

Bishop finished the game with a team-high 15 points to pace the Roos. The sophomore has now hit double figure scoring for the sixth-consecutive game and for the seventh time in eight outings.

Giles led UMKC at the foul line, going a perfect 6-for-6, while Robinson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

UMKC will take a break for the holiday before closing its three-game home stand against Avila on Dec. 28 at Municipal Auditorium. Tip-off between the Roos and the Eagles is set for 7 p.m. CT.
