KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s basketball team (1-7) is slated for matchups at Wichita State (2-8) on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. CT and at home against Harris-Stowe State (5-3) on Monday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. CT.

The Roos enter the contests after a pair of impressive performances in their first home games of the season. A 98-41 bludgeoning of Lincoln preceded a tough 76-73 overtime loss to Oral Roberts in which UMKC clawed back to take a lead late in the fourth quarter. Wichita State and Harris-Stowe State offer the team a chance to seize momentum before hosting and competing in the Roo Holiday Classic.

Aries Washington (Kansas City, Mo.) has refused to let up her relentless scoring pace as she continues to be the Roos most dangerous offensive threat. Washington’s team-leading 19 points per game ranks third in the Western Athletic Conference and her .483 field goal percentage places her fifth in the WAC.

Kiana Law (Pittsburgh, Pa.) will look to build on what was a career performance in UMKC’s overtime affair with Oral Roberts. The senior forward put together a brilliant effort in scoring a career-high 29 points on 13-of-17 (76.5%) shooting in addition to grabbing six rebounds in 34 minutes. After scoring just nine points in her previous two outings, Law will look to build on her recent effort in making a significant impact in the games ahead.

UMKC has greatly improved their shooting in their past two contests, combining to go 67-of-135 (49.6%) from the field and 22-of-30 (73.3%) from the free throw line. The Roos have been able to generate quality shots throughout the season but will look to continue connecting in the games ahead. The team has trimmed down their rotation significantly of late, using seven or fewer players in three of the last four contests.

Look for the Roos to continue utilizing their full-court pressure defense at various spots in the upcoming matchups. The pressure has provided a substantial boost for the team in creating turnovers and generating offense the other way. Against Oral Roberts, UMKC forced an astounding 25 turnovers which they converted into 29 points the other way.

Wichita State has opened the 2017-18 campaign with a tough schedule, including road trips to Oklahoma State, Creighton and #13 Tennessee. After beginning the season 0-6, the Shockers have pulled off two wins in their past four games entering the matchup with UMKC. The Roos will need to keep close tabs on redshirt senior forward Rangie Bessard, who is off to a red hot start for Wichita State this season. She leads the team averaging 17.9 points per game, ranking fifth in the American Athletic Conference, while also pulling down a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game. In the Shockers’ most recent game on the road at Missouri State, Bessard went for a game-high 21 points. As a team, Wichita State has not shot the ball overly well and has struggled to connect from beyond the three-point line with any consistency, shooting 27.5% from distance on the year. Keeping Bessard and other Wichita State forwards away from the basket and forcing shots from outside will be key for UMKC.

Harris-Stowe State comes into the game riding a four-game win streak, with three of the four wins coming by double digits. The Hornets have a balanced scoring attack that generates offense from a number of players. In their most previous game, a 71-61 win over Missouri Baptist, four players – Alantis Sutton, Dynesha Powell, Tarsheia Page and Amani Ferguson – all scored in double figures for Harris-Stowe State. The Hornets have scored at least 70 points in four consecutive games, including a 102 scoring outburst against St. Louis College of Pharmacy. UMKC will look to keep up their excellent defensive play and turn up the pressure to get the Hornets out of rhythm.

The Roos will return to Swinney Recreation to host and compete in the Roo Holiday Classic following the game against Harris-Stowe State. UMKC will square off with Northern Colorado on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. CT before playing Denver on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 3:30 p.m. CT.
