KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s basketball team hosted Sterling College for its lone tune-up of the preseason on Friday evening at Municipal Auditorium, where the Roos defeated the Warriors, 110-58.

Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) and Marco Smith (Kansas City, Kan.) led the way in scoring with a game-high 16 points apiece, while Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) dished out a game-high four assists.

Additionally, four Roos – Brandon McKissic (St. Louis, Mo.), Tony Jackson (Montgomery, Ala.), Robert Knar (Mundelein, Ill.) and Steve Dulley (Kansas City, Mo.) – each scored in double figures for UMKC, while all healthy and eligible student-athletes saw playing time.

The Roos opened up on a 14-2 run, led by a pair of buckets from Bishop and a three ball from both Robinson and Aleer Leek (Juba, South Sudan). A 10-3 run by the Warriors brought Sterling College within five, but a 3-pointer by Knar extended UMKC’s lead back to eight at the halfway point of the first half. A 3-point play by Dulley with less than 30 seconds in the half, helped UMKC hold a 58-31 advantage going into the locker room.

In the second half, the Warriors and Roos went back and forth before a 3-pointer by Marvin Nesbitt Jr. (Chicago, Ill.), pair of free throws by Smith and a 3-point basket by Jackson pushed UMKC out to a 32-point lead.

A layup by McKissic with 4:48 remaining in the game sent UMKC in triple digits, as the Roos took their largest lead – 54 points – with 16 seconds left off another pair of made free throws from Smith.

As a team, UMKC shot 49 percent (37-for-76) from the field and 64 percent (23-for-36) from the charity stripe. The Roos outscored the Warriors 42-24 in the paint, while the Roos bench contributed 64 points.

UMKC opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 10 at Wichita State. Tipoff between the Roos and the Shockers is slated for 7 p.m. CT at Charles Koch Arena. The contest is set to air on COX HD 2022.
