CHICAGO, Ill. – The UMKC volleyball team (9-16, 5-7) picked up a Western Athletic Conference road win on Friday night when it took down rival Chicago State (10-20, 1-12) 3-0 at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the Roos offensive attack with 13 kills, hitting .367 with three digs and two aces, while Brook Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) finished with 10 kills on a .381 hitting percentage.
UMKC quickly built a 1-0 lead in the match taking a 14-7 lead midway through after a kill from Harrington and a CSU error. The Cougars, however, battled back to take the lead at 18-17 and led 22-21 late in the set. Harrington answered back with a kill to tie the score, before back-to-back kills from Harrington and Jacobs gave the Roos a 25-23 win.
In the second set, the Cougars hung close early, before the Roos went on a run to extend the lead to a set-high 10 at 22-12 after an ace from Harrington and a CSU error. Chicago State closed to within eight, but a kill from Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) gave UMKC a 25-16 set win and a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Coming out of intermission, UMKC would end the match with a 25-19 win in the third set. Chicago State led early at 5-4, but the Roos quickly flipped the script, going ahead 15-10 midway through the set. Kansas City would go on to extend the advantage to a set-high six on four separate occasions, including at the final score when Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) ended the match with a kill.
For the Roos, Myers had 17 assists, three digs and an ace and setting partner Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) added 21 assists, six kills and five digs. Offensively, Sadler tallied eight kills and four blocks and Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) finished with seven kills, six digs, three blocks, three assists and an ace. Defensively, Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) led the squad with 15 digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they head to Orem, Utah, to take on Utah Valley at 8:00 p.m. CT on Nov. 9.
