KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (8-16, 4-7) closed out its home schedule in a big way on Saturday afternoon as the Roos upset first place UTRGV (13-10, 7-3) 3-2 in Western Athletic Conference play at the Swinney Recreation Center.

Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) powered the Roo effort with a career-high 24 kills, 18 digs and two blocks, hitting .308, while Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) hit .367 with 12 kills and five blocks and Brooke Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) also notched 12 kills with seven blocks.

“I’m pleased and proud of our kids,” Head Coach Christi Posey said.  “It was our best effort with the energy we played with, our execution and just good overall play.  We needed it.  Even when we were down, we still believed we were capable.  It was big win for us.”

The Roos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match, using a 4-0 run, featuring a Harrington kill and a Sadler ace, to go up 13-10 midway through.  Kansas City stretched the lead to as many as four on three separate occasions before Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) set up another Harrington kill to cinch the 25-22 win.

After UTRGV evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-17 second set win, the Roos came right back and claimed set three 25-20.  The Roos led throughout the set, building their lead to a set-high five, five times, including at the final score.

In the fourth set, UTRGV once again evened the match, taking the set 25-23 after trailing late, and forcing a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set, the Vaqueros took an early 6-3 lead, but UMKC quickly responded with the next four points on back-to-back kills from Jacobs and a third from Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.).  UTRGV retied the set at 7-7, but UMKC once again rallied, using a kill from Jacobs and a block from Sadler and Jacobs to make it a 10-7 score.  UTRGV would tie the score at 13-13 late, but Harrington closed out the match with her 23rd and 24th kills to give the Roos a 15-13 set win and a 3-2 match victory.

For the Roos, Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) finished with 23 assists, 14 digs, three kills and two aces and setting partner Schomers added 30 assists, nine digs, three kills and an ace.  Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) was the third Roo with double digit digs, notching 14 with three kills and an ace, while on Senior Day, the Roos lone senior, Mikayla Martinez (Frederick, Colo.), registered four digs, two kills and an assist.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they head to Chicago, Ill., to take on longtime rival Chicago State at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3.
