KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s soccer team (5-7-3, 3-4 WAC) was unable to overcome the visiting UNLV Rebels (8-8, 5-2 WAC) on Sunday, falling 3-1, in a tough defensive battle.

Sunday’s match against the Rebels marked the eighth straight that the Roos have tacked at least one goal on the board, which is the longest streak of its kind since UMKC scored in 10-consecutive contests during the 2008 season.

Senior Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.) took two shots in the first half to set the tone for UMKC with the help of his teammates, while newcomer Lorant Lettner (Budapest, Hungary) registered a shot of his own. In the 35th minute, UNLV broke through the packed-in Roos defense, sticking a goal on the board to lead 1-0 at the half.

Within the first minute of the second half, the Rebels fired a shot just high of the goal before McWoods sent this third shot of the day for UMKC into the hands of the UNLV goalkeeper. In the 53rd minute, UNLV converted a corner kick to take a 2-0 lead over the Roos.

A card in the box issued to UMKC in the 70th minute lined up a penalty kick for UNLV, which converted for the Rebels’ third goal of the match.

The Roos continued to fight until the closing seconds, as freshman Enric Ferrer (Barcelona, Spain) netted his first collegiate goal to put UMKC on the board for the eighth-straight match.

UMKC will hit the road for the west coast next weekend with a pair of matches at CSU Bakersfield (Oct. 27) and San Jose State (Oct. 29), before hosting Air Force on Nov. 4 to close the regular season.
