PHOENIX, Ariz. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (9-6-1, 4-0 WAC) battled hard through a tough road conference game, scoring an overtime goal to come away with a 1-0 win over Grand Canyon (4-11-1, 1-3 WAC) in Sunday’s match.

The match was the second and final game of a west coast swing that saw the Roos claim road victories over Western Athletic Conference foes CSU Bakersfield and GCU. The win was the team’s fifth in a row and marked the seventh win in their previous eight matches. UMKC emerges from the weekend in first place in the WAC with a 4-0 conference record.

The weekend posed a difficult challenge for UMKC, traveling across the country and playing Sunday’s match in Phoenix, Ariz., where the temperature climbed up to 98 degrees. The Roos proved to be more than up to the task, claiming two important wins and continuing to improve their position within the WAC standings.

“Definitely an incredible feeling after securing two more hugely important conference wins,” noted head coach Chris Cissell. “Every player on this team showed a tremendous amount of toughness in grinding through a grueling match today, and I can’t say how proud I am of the girls.”

The excessive temperatures certainly seemed to take its toll on both sides with each team struggling to finish off their attacks. The weather was not the only factor in the low-scoring affair as both defenses were outstanding in shutting down passing lanes and covering their assignments. Both team’s entered the weekend in the top-three in conference in goals allowed, so the limited scoring total was by no means surprising.

The Roos and the Lopes came awfully close to securing an opening score throughout the entire match but as the clock continued to tick down in the second half, overtime seemed all but assured. Momentum continued to shift back and forth in what was highly contested game. UMKC and Grand Canyon matched each other with an even 13 shots and five corner kicks apiece as second half ended in a scoreless tie.

Overtime would prove to be short-lived as Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) scored the golden goal just 25 seconds into the period. Childers took the ball from just in front of the midfield line before sending in a rocket from 24 yards to the far post, past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Blakely Fraasch for her fourth goal of the season.

Childers has been on an absolute tear offensively for UMKC and has been an impact performer in WAC competition. The golden goal in today’s match marked her third straight game with a score, notching a total of four in that span. Childers scored all of the Roos’ three goals in the two weekend wins.

Erin Roth (Eureka, Mo.) made the start between the posts for UMKC, securing four saves in her fourth shutout of the year. The win improved Roth’s record to an impressive 4-1-1 on the season.

Exceptional defense has become a familiar site for the Roos and it was terrific yet again in the victory over Grand Canyon. The backline of Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.), Maddi Cipolla (Lee’s Summit, Mo.), Halle Hamilton (Lincoln, Neb.) and Sydni Young (O’Fallon, Mo.) have led UMKC to five consecutive shutouts and nine shutouts on the season. The Roos have yet to allow a goal in the four WAC contests thus far in the 2017 campaign.

“Reighan certainly deserves individual recognition for her performance today and Friday night,” said Cissell. “Providing all three goals for us, each of which were terrific scores, was absolutely phenomenal. Games are not won with one player though so our success speaks loudly on how well the entire team is competing.”

UMKC will return to Durwood Stadium atop the WAC standings to host UT Rio Grande Valley (7-6-3, 2-1-1 WAC) on Friday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. CT. The Roos will then travel for a road contest with New Mexico State (8-7-2, 2-1-1 WAC) on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. CT. Both games will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network free of charge.
