PEORIA, Ill. – The UMKC volleyball team dropped a pair of tightly contested matches on the final day of the CEFCU Invitational, falling 3-0 to host Bradley and 3-1 to South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon at the Renaissance Center.

“It was a tough weekend certainly,” Head Coach Christi Posey said.  “We battled in every match but at this level, we need to play smart, be more competitive and develop more mental toughness.  We'll work on those things as we prepare for our first conference matches this coming weekend.”

For her efforts in the tournament, libero Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) was named to the all-tournament team after notching 19 digs against Bradley and 23 against SDSU.

Against the Braves, the opening set was tied at 7-7 after back-to-back kills from Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.), but BU stretched their lead back to 13-8.  The Roos closed to within three late, but Bradley claimed the set 25-21.

In the second set, Bradley led throughout, again claiming the set 25-21.  The third set, however, saw the Roos go ahead 13-8 midway through with a kill from Mikayla Martinez (Frederick, Colo.) powering the rally.  Bradley, however, battled back to once again take the set 25-21 and the take the match 3-0.

In the match with the Jackrabbits, SDSU claimed the opening set 25-21 and the second set 25-23, but UMKC would come back to cut the lead in half with a 25-22 third set win.  In the set, the Roos fell behind 8-5, but a 4-0 run featuring a kill from Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) put UMKC ahead 9-8.  SDSU went back ahead 13-9, but UMKC once again answered, this time using a 9-2 run, capped by a pair of Ratzlaff kills, to take an 18-15 lead.  The Jackrabbits would tie the set late at 19-19, but Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished off the set with a kill from Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.).

South Dakota State, though, would take the match with a 25-16 third set victory.

On the day, Brook Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) notched 17 kills and 10 digs, including 12 kills against SDSU, while Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) finished with nine kills in each match.  Ratzlaff, meanwhile, tallied 17 kills on the day and 21 digs, including 16 in the match with SDSU and Schomers recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again next weekend when they open up Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday against Grand Canyon in the Swinney Recreation Center at 7 p.m.
