KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting monetary donations this weekend at all home UMKC events to put towards Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Houston, Texas. All proceeds will benefit the Houston Food Bank and the Texas Diaper Bank.
“I am constantly inspired by the humanitarianism of our student-athletes,” Director of Athletics Carla Wilson shared. “The people in the Houston community are in need and I know all contributions – big or small – will make a difference. Our hope is that others will join us in our relief efforts.”
“One of my favorite parts about being involved in UMKC Athletics is being able to use our community as a platform to help others,” UMKC SAAC president and men’s soccer student-athlete Eddie Howe noted. “Helping the victims of Hurricane Harvey was something all of us immediately wanted to do.”
“What happened in Houston is something many of us at UMKC have never experienced,” shared UMKC SAAC events liaison and national Western Athletic Conference SAAC representative Noah Knight. “While we can’t entirely understand what those people in Texas must be going through, we hope that with our donations we will be able to ease the recovery process a little more.”
Monetary donations will be collected at the scheduled home UMKC men’s and women’s soccer matches at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Friday and Sunday, respectively, as well as the two-day UMKC Kangaroo Klassic volleyball tournament at Swinney Recreation Center.
Although UMKC SAAC representatives will only be at volleyball matches featuring the Roos, a donation station will be set up outside of the ticket booth during the neutral matches between Rutgers, South Dakota and UNI.
