AMES, Iowa – The UMKC women’s soccer team (2-4) fought a tough battle on the road against Iowa State (2-3-1) but ultimately fell by a final score of 0-2 in the final match of their weekend road swing.

Coming off a disappointing 1-2 loss on Friday night against Drake, the Roos opened up play against Iowa State with great energy and seemingly no lingering effects from their previous contest. The first half was a grind for both squads with each side playing stingy defense and showing off excellent goalkeeping.

Neither team was able to take control of the game as possession shifted back and forth throughout the first 45 minutes. The Roos were able to outshoot the Cyclones 9-4 in the first half and also held an edge in shots on goal 2-1. Iowa State came close to breaking the scoreless tie at the 34:29 mark as a long stretch pass found a streaking Cyclones forward on a breakaway, but Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) made a remarkable save to hold the scoreless tie. Lillig finished with three saves on the day.

The second half began much like the first with both teams playing dead even in the opening minutes of the period. Iowa State slowly began to take the upper hand as time passed as they worked their way into several threatening scoring chances. The Cyclones were able to control possession in their offensive zone for an extended period after opening minutes but were unable to put one home.

UMKC was able to generate a little momentum starting in the 58th minute where they responded with a sustained attack of their own. The Roos took four shots over ten minutes of game clock, two of which were on goal taken by sisters Hayden Burnett (Wichita, Kan.) and Ryann Burnett (Wichita, Kan.). The surge did not produce any scoring marks however as the contest remained scoreless approaching the 70th minute.

Iowa State broke the tie at the 72:15 mark when a bouncing ball near the goal brought Lillig out of net but took an unlucky bounce off a cluster of players on to the foot Courtney Powell, who found herself with an open net and rolled in the first goal of the match. Moments later, the Cyclones would tack on to their lead, redirecting a corner kick with a header in the 75th minute.

UMKC was unable to forge any offense attacks in the final fifteen minutes of play as Iowa State took over the contest. The match finished with Cyclones taking an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks and outshooting UMKC 11-7 in the second half.

UMKC will hit the road again to square off with Creighton on Friday, Sep. 8 before heading back to the friendly confines of Durwood Stadium on Sunday, Sep. 10 to host Omaha. The match against Omaha will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network. Both matches will have live stats available through StatBroadcast.
