EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – UMKC volleyball dropped a pair of matches on Saturday in the final day of the Cougar Classic. The Roos began the day with a 3-1 loss to Wright State before falling 3-0 to host SIU Edwardsville in the nightcap.
For her efforts in the tournament, sophomore Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) was named to the all-tournament team.
In the morning’s match, the Roos built an early 1-0 lead in the contest after downing the Raiders 25-20. The two teams battled throughout the set, as there were 11 ties through the first 38 points. UMKC, however, used a 6-1 run, fueled by back-to-back kills from Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.), to close the set and come away with the win.
The lead, though, was short-lived as Wright State won each of the next two sets in extra points with a 27-25 win and a 26-24 victory, respectively, before closing out the match with a 25-18 win in set four.
Against the Cougars, SIUE jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 win in the first set.
Edwardsville then extended the lead to 2-0 after winning set two 25-19.
The Roos would look to force the match to go the distance in the third set after taking a 12-10 lead on a kill by junior Emma Dyer (Higginsville, Mo.), but the Cougars went back in front before closing the match out with a 25-21 third set victory.
On the day, Ratzlaff finished with 25 kills and 27 digs, including 21 digs against the Raiders. Harrington, meanwhile, chipped in 18 kills and 20 digs. Libero Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) reached double figure digs in each match, tallying 10 and 15, respectively, as well as nine assist in the match with SIUE.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they return to Kansas City for the annual Kangaroo Klassic with an opening match against South Dakota at 1 p.m.
