LAS CRUCES, N.M. – UMKC women's tennis (11-9, 4-1) has earned the top seed in the Western Athletic Conference Championship and will face the winner of No. 4 Chicago State and Seattle U at 10 a.m. CT Saturday at the NM State Tennis Center. With the No. 1 seed, the Roos earned a first round bye.

Previously, UMKC defeated Chicago State 7-0 on March 19 in Las Cruces and beat Seattle U by the same score on April 1 at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City.

The Roos have won six of the last eight matches, including four in a row from March 18 – April 1. UMKC is led by standout freshman Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia), who has gone 11-5 in singles play and had a 10-match winning streak from Feb. 15 – April 13. She has also notched a 12-6 doubles record, including an 11-6 mark in No. 1 play.

Transfer Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) – last season's Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year – has registered a 10-3 singles record, including a 6-1 mark in No. 5 play. She has won eight of her last nine matches.

Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) is 8-7 at the No.1 singles position. Freshman Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) is 7-4 in singles play, including 2-0 mark at No. 5 and 5-3 record in No. 6 competition.
