CHICAGO, Ill. – UMKC (16-15, 8-6) secured its first winning season in six years with an 87-82 victory over Chicago State (6-25, 1-13) on Saturday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) scored 25 points and drained five 3-pointers to pace the Roos while playing back in his hometown. Four UMKC players scored in double figures. The 16 victories are the most by the Roos since having the same win total in 2010-11.

“Going on the road and winning is hard,” head coach Kareem Richardson said. “Road wins in conference play are very difficult. These are the types of wins that next week is going to be about. They may not be pretty, but a ‘W’ is a ‘W.’ You’re trying to survive and advance, so hopefully we can learn a big lesson off this win.”

UMKC shot 54 percent (28-for-52) from the floor, 42 percent (10-for-24) from 3-point range and 88 percent (21-for-24) from the free throw line to hold off a pesky Cougars attack. The Roos outrebound Chicago State 36-25 and recorded a 25-4 advantage in bench points.

Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) added 13 points while Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Broderick Newbill (Kansas City, Mo.) both finished with 11.

Robinson hit three huge shots throughout the game to propel the Roos. He banked in a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer from near midcourt, sank a triple to regain the lead at 48-47 with 13:34 remaining, drained a trey to extend the lead to 77-70 with 1:58 left and connected on two free throws with 48 seconds on the clock to help seal the game.

The Roos led 38-36 at half following Robinson’s long triple after a heads-up play by Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) to inbound the ball quickly with four seconds on the clock. Following intermission, Chicago State took a 45-40 lead before UMKC answered back and would not trail again following Robinson’s go-ahead triple.

From there, the game was close throughout as the Cougars would not go away, but the Roos held off every threat. Boyd sank three long triples in the second half. UMKC was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line over the final 48 seconds to clinch the victory.

Fred Sims Jr. led Chicago State with 31 points and six rebounds. Trayvon Palmer added 19 points and eight rebounds.

UMKC begins the WAC Tournament with a 9 p.m. CT tip vs. UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
