PHOENIX, Ariz. – UMKC (15-15, 7-6) put up a valiant effort on Saturday night in front of a record crowd on Senior Night at Grand Canyon (21-9, 10-3) as the Roos fell 84-77. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) paced UMKC with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Broderick Newbill (Kansas City, Mo.) and Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) both added 18 points.
UMKC tied a season-high by shooting 56.1 percent (32-for-57) from the field but were unable to overcome GCU, who shot 51.7 percent (31-for-60) and drained nine 3-pointers.
A raucous GCU Arena record crowd of 7,502 ignited an energy-filled atmosphere, but the Roos continually answered the Lopes attack.
At halftime, GCU led 44-34 as the Lopes held a 24-13 advantage in points in the paint. Following intermission, UMKC trimmed the deficit to two at 46-44 with 16:17 remaining but that was as close as the Roos would come.
Grand Canyon then stretched the lead to as much as 14 at 73-59 with 8:12 left before UMKC fought back once again. The Roos cut the margin to 81-77 with 1:39 remaining and got a defensive stop but were unable to score on the offensive end.
From there, the Lopes clinched the victory at the free throw line.
Boyd was 8-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and at the free throw line. He played a career-high 39 minutes. Newbill was 8-for-12 from the field with six rebounds. Steward finished 8-for-13 with two triples. Dashawn King (Bronx, N.Y.) added 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting with six rebounds.
Joshua Braun led GCU with a game-high 28 points on 10-for-16 shooting, including a 5-for-9 line from beyond the arc. DeWayne Russell added 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
UMKC closes the regular season with a 4:35 p.m. CT matchup next Saturday at Chicago State.
