About the Roos
The Roos went 2-3 last weekend at the Battle at the Beach as freshman Alex Larson (Overland Park, Kan.) captured her first career wins, both against Rider. The freshman right-hander pitched all five innings of UMKC’s 8-0 victory on Saturday, allowing just three hits and one walk. In Sunday’s 5-3 win over the Broncs, Larson came in for relief to pitch the final 3.2 innings and gave up just two hits while throwing two strikeouts.
UMKC opened the 2017 season at the Belmont Winter Fest Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., on Feb. 10-12. In the Roos’ 4-2 victory over UMBC, sophomore Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs while junior Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) contributed two hits in four at-bats.
Junior outfielder Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) and sophomore infielder Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) were each named to the 2017 Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference team in a poll by the league’s coaches.
Sims, a 2016 All-WAC first team selection, returns to the field for UMKC this season with second-team members Goodwin and Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.). The Roos finished 24-26 overall and 10-5 in the WAC in 2016.
UMKC will host the We Back Pat Tournament at Missouri 3&2 Complex next weekend. The Roos will be joined by Missouri State, St. Louis and SEMO at the three-day tournament.
