CSU Bakersfield Snaps UMKC Win Streak, 71-62

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – UMKC (15-14, 7-5) men’s basketball had its 5-game winning streak ended by league-leading CSU Bakersfield (20-7, 11-1) in a 71-62 defeat Thursday night at the Icardo Center. The Runners shot 57 percent for the game while UMKC shot only 39 percent. The Roos hung tough in a game that featured seven ties and seven lead changes.

Dashawn King (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Roos with a season-high 16 points. Broderick Newbill (Kansas City, Mo.) added 14 points, a career-high three steals and two blocks. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) finished with 11 points and seven assists.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle featuring five lead changes and two ties. UMKC trailed 31-28 at the break after the Roos shot 40 percent (10-for-25) from the floor during the initial 20 minutes. King led UMKC with seven points while Boyd added four assists before half.

In the second, there were five more ties and two lead changes. A tip-in by Duane Clark (St. Louis, Mo.) gave UMKC a 47-45 with 11:42 remaining before the Runners answered back on the next two possessions. Clark finished with nine points and four rebounds in 15 reserve minutes.

The Roos pulled within two at 54-52 with 8:54 left but that was as close as UMKC would come as CSU Bakersfield shot a blistering 68 percent (13-for-19) over the final 20 minutes.

UMKC outscored CSUB 22-15 in points off turnovers but the Runners held a 44-32 advantage in points in the paint.

Shon Briggs paced Bakersfield with a game-high 20 points with six rebounds and four assists. Dedrick Basile added 15 points, two assists and two steals.

The Roos travel to Grand Canyon on Saturday for an 8 p.m. CT tip on KSMO-TV.
