UMKC Wins Third Straight, Defeats Utah Valley

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC (13-13, 5-4) shot 48 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range as the Roos earned a third consecutive victory, 84-76, Thursday night against Utah Valley (10-13, 2-6) at Municipal Auditorium. Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) posted his second straight double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds while LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) added 19 points and five assists.

The Roos got off to a hot start, shooting a scorching 56 percent (18-for-32) with five 3-pointers in the first half. Steward notched 14 points and five rebounds during the first 20 minutes. UMKC went on an 11-0 run over 3:15 to pull ahead 13-5 and continued to build on the lead throughout the first half, going to the break ahead 43-33.

UVU answered following intermission and eventually tied the score 57-57 with 11:20 remaining. The Wolverines grabbed a 60-57 lead on a 3-pointer by Ivory Young with 9:32 left before Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) answered on the ensuing possession with a triple of his own to tie the score.

From there, Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) scored on a fast break lay-in and Dashawn King (Bronx, N.Y.) drained a trey to cap a 7-0 run over 1:15 to regain a lead that would not be relinquished by the Roos.

After Kenneth Ogbe connected from distance for UVU to cut the UMKC lead to 69-66 with 6:52 remaining, Boyd answered with a long 3-pointer to push the lead back to six points. Robinson followed with a trey of his own to open up a 9-point advantage with 4:36 left.

The Roos went 7-for-10 from the foul line over the final 1:44 to seal the victory. For the game, UMKC was 26-for-58 from the floor and 11-for-22 from 3-point range.

Darnell Tillman (St. Louis, Mo.) set a career-high with five steals and tied a career-best for the fourth time this season with nine rebounds. King added a season-high 13 points with three steals and two assists. Boyd was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line and hit three triples.

UMKC led for 34:16 and held a 34-26 advantage in points in the paint and a 31-17 lead in point off turnovers.

The Roos host Seattle U on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in downtown Kansas City as UMKC goes for its first 4-game winning streak since Nov. 21 – Dec. 1, 2015.
