LAS CRUCES, N.M. – UMKC (9-12, 2-3) was unable to snap the New Mexico State (18-2, 5-0) winning streak as the Aggies won their 16th straight, 94-71, on Saturday night at the Pan American Center. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) led the Roos with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) and Broderick Newbill (Kansas City, Mo.) both added 11 points.
NM State shot 54 percent (34-for-63) from the field and 40 percent (8-for-20) from 3-point range. The Aggies outscored the Roos 50-40 in the paint, 14-11 in points off turnovers and 24-15 in second-chance points. Ian Baker led the way with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists. Jemerrio Jones registered a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The Aggies held a 46-33 halftime lead after shooting 46 percent (16-for-35) from the field and 46 percent (5-for-11) from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes. UMKC shot 34 percent (11-for-32) from the field and was only 3-for-12 from distance in the opening half.
Over the final 20 minutes, it was much the same NM State shot a red-hot 64 percent (18-for-28) from the field. UMKC shot 44 percent (14-for-32) from the floor in the second half and 39 percent (25-for-64) for the game. The Roos were 5-for-21 from 3-point range and shot 76 percent (16-for-21) at the foul line.
UMKC returns home to begin a 3-game home stand vs. Grand Canyon on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT in a contest that will air on American Sports Network.
