OREM, Utah – UMKC (9-11, 2-2) men’s basketball was defeated 86-76 by Utah Valley (9-9, 1-2) Saturday night at the UCCU Center. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) led the Roos with 22 points while Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) and Broderick Newbill (Kansas City, Mo.) both finished with 14 points.
The Roos started off well, pulling ahead 10-3 before UVU went on a 14-0 first half run to pull ahead for good. UMKC battled back, trimming the halftime deficit to four at 35-31.
Boyd scored 11 points in the first half, extending his consecutive double figures scoring streak to 19 games. The Roos shot 50 percent (5-for-10) from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes, including three triples from Boyd. The Wolverines went 15-for-18 at the foul line before intermission.
In the second half, UVU shot 53 percent (16-for-30) from the floor to close out the victory. UMKC showed resiliency, keeping the deficit within reach for nearly the entire second half.
For the game, UVU shot 45 percent (25-for-56) from the field while UMKC shot 39 percent (22-for-57). Both teams drained five 3-pointers. There were 63 fouls called in the contest, resulting in both teams shooting 42 free throws.
Boyd finished 7-for-14 shooting, including a 3-for-5 mark from distance and 5-for-7 line at the charity stripe. Newbill was 4-for-7 from the floor while Bishop went 4-for-9 and a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line.
UVU outrebounded UMKC 45-34 and held a 40-26 advantage in points in the paint. Brandon Randolph paced the Wolverines with 16 points and nine rebounds. Zach Nelson added 14 points while Conner Toolson added 13.
UMKC will now have a week off before closing out a 3-game road swing at New Mexico State on Jan. 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT in another contest that will air locally on KSMO-TV in the Kansas City viewing area.
