Steward’s Career Night Leads UMKC Over Seattle U

SEATTLE, Wash. – UMKC (9-10, 2-1) men’s basketball earned an 84-68 victory over Seattle U (8-9, 0-2) Thursday night at KeyArena. The Roos drained 12 shots from beyond the 3-point arc and shot 45 percent from the field for the game. Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) led the way with a career-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds, two assists and a block in 30 minutes of action. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) added 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

After Seattle U got out to a 22-16 lead, the Roos went on a 16-0 run over 5:14 to take control of the game. Steward scored 11 points during that run – including eight straight – and drained three of his four triples on the night.

At the half, UMKC led 36-29. Steward registered 13 points and four rebounds in 13 minutes during the opening half.

Following intermission, the Roos kept increasing the lead. Boyd stretched the margin to double digits at 41-31 with a 3-pointer only 1:25 into the second half. The lead continually grew down the stretch as UMKC shot 48 percent (13-for-27) from the field and 46 percent (6-for-13) from distance in the final 20 minutes.

The largest lead of the evening was 18 at 82-64 with 33 seconds remaining.

Steward finished 5-for-10 from the floor, 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Boyd was 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the foul line.

Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) also reached double figures with 10 points on 2-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc, including a crucial basket to stretch the lead to 69-57 with 3:39 remaining.

The Roos outscored the Redhawks 46-24 in bench points, 16-5 in points off turnovers and 10-6 in second-chance points. UMKC committed a season-low nine turnovers and dished out 18 assists on 26 made field goals. The Roos controlled the glass, outrebounding Seattle U 40-32.

UMKC continues Western Athletic Conference play at Utah Valley on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT in a contest that will air on KSMO-TV in the Kansas City viewing region.
