KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC (7-7) was defeated 77-66 by UT Martin (10-4) Tuesday night at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) set career-highs with 32 points and seven 3-pointers for the Roos. He finished 7-for-12 from distance and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
UMKC shot only 31 percent (21-for-67) from the field and 27 percent (9-for-34) from beyond the 3-point arc. UT Martin shot 43 percent (29-for-67) from the floor.
“It’s just one of those nights where we’re wide open and its shots we typically make,” head coach Kareem Richardson said. “But to our guys’ credit, we were only down nine at half. In the second half, we were pressing and just didn’t have a great offensive night tonight.”
The Roos led early on, getting out to a 14-9 lead before the relentless Skyhawks attack grabbed the lead. UTM was active on the boards all night, grabbing 59 rebounds. Martin led 30-21 at intermission.
UT Martin led for the entire second half. The Roos pulled within six at 70-64 with 50 seconds remaining but that was as close as UMKC would come.
Kedar Edwards recorded a double-double for UTM with 18 points and 17 rebounds to go along with seven assists and two steals. Three other Skyhawks scored in double figures.
Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.), Broderick Newbill (Kansas City, Mo.) and Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) finished with eight points for the Roos. Darnell Tillman (St. Louis, Mo.) pulled down a career-high nine rebounds for the third time this season.
Boyd became the first UMKC player with 30-plus points since Dec. 28, 2014. He has now surpassed the 20-point mark seven times this year and on 14 occasions in 45 games in a UMKC uniform.
UMKC will take a break from action over the holidays and returns to play at Mississippi State on Dec. 29.
