KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC (7-4) defeated William Jewell (3-5) 93-71 on Kansas City Day Saturday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) led the Roos with 21 points, six assists and six rebounds in 29 minutes. Five UMKC players scored in double figures as the Roos improved to 5-0 at home this season.

UMKC wore specially-designed Kansas City-themed uniforms designed by Charlie Hustle that featured the KC skyline on both the jerseys and shorts as part of the promotion honoring civic pride.

In the paint, UMKC outscored Jewell 54-16 and recorded a 46-26 rebounding advantage. The Roos shot 56 percent (37-for-66) from the floor and 81 percent (13-for-16) from the free throw line for the game.

“I’m proud of our guys,” head coach Kareem Richardson said. “It’s really important to have the rebounding edge and we had another game with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.”

Boyd finished 8-for-12 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He scored 11 of his 21 points to key a 16-0 run over 4:11 during the latter portion of the first half.

“He’s got great poise coming off of the ball screens,” Richardson said. “We’re really pleased with his play – six assists and zero turnovers – that’s awesome.”

At halftime, the Roos led 43-36. They kept it going in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 50-35 over the final 20 minutes while shooting 57 percent (20-for-35) from the field.

Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) finished with 14 points while Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) added 13 and Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) set a career-high with 12. Aleer Leek (Juba, South Sudan) registered a season-best 10 points. Darnell Tillman (St. Louis, Mo.) grabbed a career-high nine rebounds for the second time in as many Saturdays.

Patrick Whelan led Jewell with 24 points, including six 3-pointers. Matt Lassen added 20 points with six triples of his own.

UMKC closes the brief 2-game home stand Thursday with a 6:35 p.m. CT tipoff vs. Omaha.
