BROOKINGS, S.D. – UMKC (6-3) was defeated 77-68 by South Dakota State (4-6) on Saturday at Frost Arena. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) led the Roos with 19 points, six assists, five rebounds and a career-high five steals. Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) added 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Kyle Steward (Detroit, Mich.) finished with a career-high 16 points to go with six rebounds.

The Roos got off to a fast start offensively as Boyd and Ross both drained two triples during a 14-2 run to begin the game that was highlighted by a Darnell Tillman (St. Louis, Mo.) put-back dunk with 15:42 left in the first half.

UMKC led for most of the first half as the Jackrabbits began their comeback. A 3-pointer by Andre Wallace with 2:27 remaining before halftime gave SDSU a 32-31 lead that would hold up until the break.

Boyd and Ross both drained three treys during the opening 20 minutes.

After Ross tied the score 34-34 less than a minute into the second half, South Dakota State went on a 9-0 run over 2:24 and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

UMKC cut the deficit to five at 54-49 and 57-52 on baskets from Steward but that was the smallest margin the Roos would face.

For the game, UMKC shot 38 percent (22-for-58) from the floor, 38 percent (13-for-34) from beyond the arc and 79 percent (11-for-14) from the foul line.

SDSU shot 56 percent (27-for-48) from the field, 42 percent (8-for-19) from long range and 63 percent (15-for-24) from the free throw line.

The Roos forced 22 turnovers, including eight by standout Mike Daum, who finished with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds. Tillman matched him with nine boards, a new career-high.

Wallace scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Jackrabbits. SDSU outscored UMKC 34-14 in the paint and 37-10 in bench points. The Roos posted an 18-12 advantage in second-chance points.

UMKC travels to iconic Allen Fieldhouse on Tuesday to face the Kansas Jayhawks. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
