KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC men’s basketball earned a 79-55 victory over Missouri S&T in the exhibition opener on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium. Martez Harrison (Kansas City, Mo.) finished with a game-high 14 points with four assists. Freshman Xavier Bishop (Springfield, Ill.) added a game-high five assists for the Roos, who had 14 players see game action.

“I thought our starting lineup got off to a good start and I was really pleased overall with the defensive effort,” head coach Kareem Richardson said. “I thought our pressure really bothered them.”

The Roos defense held S&T to only 26 percent (18-for-69) shooting from the field and 22 percent (5-for-23) from beyond the arc.

UMKC opened the game on a 7-0 run, led by five points from Harrison. Missouri S&T then went on a 10-0 run of their own before the Roos regained the lead and took control of the contest.

The Roos went on a 16-0 run over nearly the final five minutes of the first half in which six different players scored. LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) drained back-to-back 3-pointers during that stretch.

At halftime, UMKC led 38-19. The second half was much the same as the Roos stretched the lead to 27 points at 77-50 with 3:03 remaining before closing out the 24-point victory.

Harrison, Boyd and Broderick Newbill (Kansas City, Mo.) all scored in double figures. Boyd and Newbill both finished with 10 points. Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) added nine points, five rebounds and three steals.

Freshmen Duane Clark (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) both contributed in the paint. Clark recorded seven points and five rebounds while Giles had six points and seven boards.
