(Brookings, S.D.) - In the second game of a doubleheader, the UMKC softball team (16-20, 4-7 SL) fell 4-0 to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (8-18-1, 3-8 SL) on Friday evening.

Earlier, the Kangaroos won 9-1 in game one.

In the third, South Dakota State took a 2-0 lead when catcher Morgan McGabe doubled to right off pitcher Cinda Ramos (8-9) as two runners scored.

To leadoff the fifth, same score, the Jackrabbits had a chance to extend its lead when infielder Marlee Petersen doubled down the left field line and would later advance to third after the ensuing batter, outfielder Devon Reick, grounded out to first. But, the Kangaroos defense retired the two next batters, including Ramos striking out catcher Morgan McCabe to end the inning.

In the sixth with two on and one out, South Dakota State made it a 3-0 game when outfielder Krista Honken doubled down the left field line.  Next up, infielder Kelly Kleppin singled up the middle to drive in catcher Sammy Bingham to increase the Jackrabbits lead to four.

After that, UMKC head coach Meredith Smith replaced Ramos with Deanna Friese (7-10), who struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

In the seventh for UMKC with one out and nobody on, South Dakota State pitcher Pam Nicholson (4-8) walked catcher Katie Henning.  Next up, outfielder Megan Vicino reached on a fielder's choice as pinch runner Ashley Whiteside was thrown out at second.

Down to its last out, infielder Kaelene Curry grounded out to short to end the game.

Tomorrow, the two teams will conclude its three-game set at 12 p.m.
